Event is the Largest Women’s-Only Race in Indiana and the Ninth Largest Women’s Half Marathon in the U.S.

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 28, 2019) – The Indy Women’s Half Marathon and 5K, one of the top women’s-only races in the country, is back for its ninth year and is expected to attract some of the fastest women from Indiana and beyond. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 in downtown Indianapolis at 7:30 a.m.The event has been labeled as the kickoff to the fall racing season will offer a new start and finish location along with the same high level of competition and fun that a women’s-only event brings.

New for 2019, the event will start and finish at Military Park on New York Street between West and Blackford Streets. The new Red Line bus system forced the course change with its opening on September 1. Race organizers were able to utilize70 percent of last year’s route. As in years past, runners and walkers will enjoy a flat and fast course, passing a number of Indianapolis landmarks along the way. The half marathon makes its way through downtown and alongside the White River and Riverside Park before returning to downtown.

In addition to the new course, this year’s race features other important changes. In an effort to recognize and reward the high level of competition that has been featured at the Indy Women’s Half in recent years, race organizers have expanded the event’s purse to the top-20 finishers for the half marathon. The top positions in the 5K will also offer a cash payout, bringing the total purse money presented to $4,000, the largest in the nine-year history of the event.

“The Indy Women’s Half Marathon has grown to be a highly competitive race that draws world-class runners from around the region, and we are excited that we can recognize the deep field that we attract with an expanded purse this year,” said Race Director Todd Oliver. “But more importantly we always look forward to hosting every woman who joins us for this race, regardless of their pace. It is an event that is inspiring from the first finisher to the last.”

The Indy Women’s Half Marathon and 5K will once again support the I.W.I.N. Foundation, which provides assistance to individuals statewide who are currently receiving treatment for breast cancer by relieving emotional, physical, and financial burdens. This year’s participants will have the option of running in special race bibs where they can write in a name of a loved one or cause they are racing to honor. The special “I Run For” bibs will be offered to every participant in the race.
